There is something so rewarding about a project that looks beautiful and is actually fun to make. This round macrame coaster is exactly that — a functional, handmade piece that adds a warm touch to any table setting, and one that you will want to make again and again in every color.
This project uses the Alternating Square Knot pattern, which makes it very accessible even if you are still building your skills. And if you are already comfortable with your Square Knots, this one will come together beautifully!
About This Macrame Coaster
What I love most about this coaster is how the Alternating Square Knot creates such a clean, even texture. It looks intricate at first glance, but it is actually a pretty basic pattern — and that is exactly what makes it so satisfying to make. You can really see your progress as the piece comes together.
I loved this pattern so much that I decided to make it in different colors, and honestly, they all turned out beautifully. It is one of those projects where playing with color is half the fun.
This coaster also makes such a thoughtful handmade gift — the kind that looks far more impressive than the effort it takes.
Materials You Will Need
🧵 MACRAME CORDS:
- 3mm single strand cotton cord:
- 8x of 60cm long
- 8x of 50cm long
- 16x of 40cm long
✂️OTHER MATERIALS:
- Measuring tape
- Cork board and pins
- Scissors
- Latch hook
- Fabric glue
A Note on Cord Choice
For this project, I chose to work with single strand cotton cord, and I really think it is the perfect match for this piece. It brings a cleaner, more refined texture that lets the Alternating Square Knot pattern really shine.
For thickness, I found that 3mm is just right — it gives the coaster a nice structure without being too bulky. I also tried it with a 4mm cord, but it turned out too chunky and made it harder to work the loops detail at the edge of the coaster. So I would definitely recommend sticking with 3mm for this one!
Macrame Knots & Techniques Used
- Reverse Lark’s Head Knot
- Alternating Square Knot.
If you are new to macrame, don’t worry. The Square Knot is one of the most foundational knots in macrame and is very beginner-friendly.

Tips for Success
- Keep your tension consistent throughout the project. This is what gives the coaster its even, flat texture — and it really shows in the finished piece.
- Work on a flat, stable surface so your coaster keeps its round shape as you build outward. In the video you will notice I worked with two cork boards — a round one on top and a larger one as the base. This way you can easily work around the piece and turn it as you go, without having to reposition all your cords every time you need to move it.
- When working on the edge detail, if you notice the cords coming loose or unraveling, give them a little twist before passing them inside the square knot to form the loop. It helps the loops stay structured and look much neater in the finished piece.
Final Thoughts
This coaster is one of those projects that keeps giving — once you make one, you will want a whole set. And if you are already thinking about a matching placemat, stay tuned, because I have something coming very soon for members! 🌿
