If you love practical projects that are also beautiful, this macrame basket is a wonderful piece to make. It combines texture, structure, and delicate details to create a small decorative basket that can be used for storage, organization, or simply as a handmade accent in your home.
This project is beginner-friendly and uses a combination of techniques, including macrame weaving and alternating square knots, making it a great opportunity to practice different skills in one piece.
Whether you are new to macrame or already have some experience, this basket is a fun and satisfying project to create.
About This Macrame Basket
One of the special features of this basket is the base, which is created using a macrame weaving technique. Unlike traditional knot-based foundations, this method interlaces cords to form a structured surface. This technique is sometimes seen for example in wall hangings, placemats, and basket-style macrame projects, although there is not a widely standardized name for it in the macrame world. It creates a stable base while adding beautiful texture and visual interest.
The walls of the basket are made using square knots, more specifically alternating square knots, which provide both strength and flexibility. This classic macrame pattern is perfect for creating volume and shaping the sides of the basket.
To finish the piece, I added a delicate decorative edge at the top. This small detail gives the basket a refined and elegant look while also helping define the structure.

Square knot — alternating square knots
If you are new to macrame, don’t worry, the square knot is one of the most essential knots to learn and is very beginner-friendly.

Tips for Success
Keep your cord tension consistent, especially when making the base. If you add too much tension, the base can become distorted.
Take your time when shaping the basket walls. This helps create a cleaner result. Again, keeping the cord tension consistent will help the walls stay even and avoid becoming floppy.
Don’t skip the finishing details at the top, as they really elevate the overall look of the basket. For me, this was the part that required the most time and attention.
Final Thoughts
This macrame basket is a lovely project to practice different techniques while creating something useful and decorative. Handmade baskets also make beautiful gifts, and you can easily customize the size, color, or cord type to match your style.
